I've always made custom furniture . I get an idea or an inspiration from somewhere, there's no telling where this may come from and often nothing comes at all, then I get obsessed and spend hours defining the detail and trying to understand how it could be made. I avoid the easy and predictable because this does not challenge me or the skills of makers. I don't worry about lead times or costs at this stage because the most important thing for me about it is the design.
The detailed work is important to me because I have seen too many builds flounder on unsettled client requirements and/or poorly specified design documentation. I don't like working like this so my projects are structured in phases with each phase having clear entry and exit criteria.
I am concerned with sustainability, sourcing materials responsibly and treating makers and suppliers fairly and with respect. The design comes first so I will use materials which are appropriate to realising it, rather than being constrained by the choice of a particular material. This may mean using metal or veneered synthetic substrates which have more stability than solid woods.
